Darren Julien, CEO of Julien’s Auctions, made an appearance on CNN this morning (about the same time Martin Nolan was featured and a guest of the Today Show talking about Marilyn Monroe) to discuss some of the Whitney Houston dresses and wardrobe that will be offered at auction at the end of the month. Hake’s Americana & Collectibles Auction #200 May 2010; Note About Los Angeles Times on Richard Wilson (Norma’s Jeans) Provenance
Memorabilia dealer Hake’s Americana & Collectibles is holding their 200th auction, with lots ending in late May. While the selection of original prop-related material is quite small compared with the general popular culture memorabilia comprising the auction, I thought it would be prudent to make note of an old article published by the Los Angeles Times that may prompt interested bidders to do proper due diligence on the provenance of a handful of lots. The Silence of the Lambs & Ed Cubberly: The Creator of Hannibal Lecter’s Mask
As frequent readers know, I have published a number of articles in search of information about the original prop masks made for and worn by Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Red Dragon films as well as analysis of those purported to be, and other related issues (see Market Watch | Hannibal Lecter Masks). “Screen Used” Hannibal Lecter Mask – Update 2
I published a few Market Watch articles in 2007 and 2008 focused on the sale of Hannibal Lecter masks, specifically from the film, Hannibal. This feature updates the state of the marketplace for these pieces with an archive of proof that exact replicas cast from an original source exist in the marketplace, making it very challenging for the authentication of any original masks. “Screen Used” Hannibal Lecter Mask – Update
Over a year ago, I published an article about a Hannibal Lecter mask described by the seller as “a SCREEN USED PROP – actually Worn / Used in the Film“. This was listed on eBay for $14,000.00 and differed in a variety of ways from the mask seen on screen in the movie, Hannibal. This mask offered for sale had very specific and noticeable damage to it and included a Star Wares COA. It appears that this mask has resurfaced on eBay, now offered by Star Wares (starwarescollectibles) starting at $4,999.99. If the same piece, it appears that the mask has suffered considerable damage since the May 2007 auction. [Read more…]
Bonhams “Superman IV Flying Suit” (June 2008 Auction)
The upcoming Bonhams June 18, 2008 “Entertainment Memorabilia” auction held at Knightsbridge (see article) features a Superman costume attributed to use by Christopher Reeve in the fourth installment of the film series, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.
The Bonhams site features Flash technology so that interested parties can zoom in on the supplied photo for more detail; while time consuming, it is possible to then piece together a larger, higher resolution photo using Photoshop, which I have done to take a closer look at this costume.
It is part of Sale 15801, Lot 108: LINK [Read more…]
