This is Part 1 of a two-part series chronicling my visit to the EMP Museum in Seattle. This Part 1 feature will focus on the current Movie-related exhibits at the museum, while Part 2 has been published on sister site, Rock Subculture Journal, and that photo journal will cover the Music-related exhibits. The current movie and television related exhibits include “Icons of Science Fiction” and “Can’t Look Away: The Lure of the Horror Film”.
The Experience Music Project has organized an exhibition called “AVATR: The Exhibition”, which will be held at the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle from June 4th through September 3rd. Per the official site, this was created with Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products and James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment, and “will feature authentic props and costumes, interactive displays, concept models, and sketches from the blockbuster film”. I had an opportunity last week to visit the touring “Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television” exhibit, which opened at the California Museum on October 3rd. As has been reported in the past, this traveling exhibition includes original props and costumes associated with Paul Allen (co-founder of Microsoft) and Science Fiction Museum in Seattle, Washington.

The award-winning Oshkosh Public Museum in Wisconsin is holding an “Out of This World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television” exhibition from February 16-May 18, 2008. This exhibition is created by the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame of Seattle, Washington. This appears similar to the exhibit reported on last year in Seattle (see “Out of this World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television“).
Pieces in display include the original hat worn by the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz, a whip and jacket from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Darth Vader’s helmet and lightsaber, a jumpsuit and Proton Pack from Ghostbusters, and more. [Read more…]
