Observations from Julien’s Auctions “The Trilogy Collection: Props and Costumes From Middle-Earth” Sale of Lord of the Rings Assets

As noted in my interview with Troika Brodsky, the owner of the Lord of the Rings collection consigned to Julien’s Auctions, we have been friends for around a decade, so I was particularly interested in this auction. Julien’s Auctions held their “The Trilogy Collection: Props and Costumes from Middle-Earth” sale event this past Thursday, which featured 92 lots of original production assets from the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films made by Peter Jackson. Bonhams ‘Entertainment Memorabilia’ Auction to be Held in Knightsbridge, London on December 18, Catalog Available Online

Bonhams will be holding their next “Entertainment Memorabilia” (auction 20772) sale event in Knightsbridge on December 18. This sale includes a mix of film/television as well as music related memorabilia, with a total of 417 lots, with a number of items from the series Torchwood, Doctor Who, The Beatles, and Rolling Stones. Heritage Auction Galleries ‘Entertainment & Music Memorabilia Signature Auction’ Catalog Online, Dallas Event To Be Held December 6th

The Heritage Auction Galleries has published on their latest online catalog and listings for their upcoming event, “Entertainment & Music Memorabilia Signature Auction – Dallas #7082”, to be held on December 6th at their Dallas, Texas location. As per usual, the bulk of the 1,988 items skews toward vintage/classic Hollywood stars and a good deal of personally owned items/estate items, prominently featuring Farrah Fawcett, as well as iconic music rock and roll items. Catalog Now Online for Julien’s Auctions Collection of Props from the Lord of the Rings (“Trilogy Collection”) Sale on December 5th

As reported in early October, Julien’s Auctions will be holding their “The Trilogy Collection: Props & Costumes from Middle Earth” sale on December 5th, and the catalog for this event is now available online in FlipBook form as well as a download in PDF format. The sale features the largest offering of original material (props, costumes, and other original assets) from a single collector from the trilogy of movies directed by Peter Jackson (The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King) and based on the J.R.R. Tolkien best-selling fantasy novel, The Lord of the Rings. The catalog weighs in at 121 pages with 92 lots, all part of a single franchise sale which is fairly rare in this art market, given the size, scope, and sale of the offerings. [Read more…]

Bonhams ‘What Dreams Are Made Of : A Century of Movie Magic at Auction as Curated by Turner Classic Movies (TCM)’ Simulcast Auction to be Held in New York on November 25th

Bonhams will be holding a special event next month, “What Dreams Are Made Of: A Century of Movie Magic at Auction as Curated by Turner Classic Movies” (auction 21427). The live auction will be held in New York (and simulcast in Los Angeles) on November 25th. Troika Brodsky, special guest. This is the eighteenth ‘Prop Talk’ podcast by the Original Prop Blog. Troika Brodsky is a hobbyist who has, over the past ten years or so, amassed the largest personal collection of Lord of the Rings props, costumes, and other material from the film trilogy. The collection will be auctioned by Julien’s Auctions (see official site) on December 5th as their “Trilogy Collection: Props & Costumes from Middle-Earth” auction event. The collection will also be part of a public exhibition at Newbridge Silverware Museum of Style Icons (MOSI) in Kildare, Ireland from October 23rd to November 17th.

Julien’s Auctions ‘Icons and Idols’ Estate of William Travilla and Hollywood Catalogs Online, Event to be Held in Beverly Hills November 8th, 9th, & 10th

Julien’s Auctions has published the online catalog for their upcoming sale – “Icons and Idols” – which will be held at their Beverly Hills gallery on November 8th, 9th, and 10th. The first day of the three days of auction will feature Property from the Estate of William Travilla, which includes over 400 items encompassing original costumes, costume sketches, awards, and more. This collection will be on exhibit at Newbridge Silverware’s Museum of Style Icons in Ireland prior to the sale. The following two days will feature a variety of Hollywood memorabilia with 800 lots including Clayton Moore’s Lone Ranger mask, a 1942 Academy Award, and a number of items from Marilyn Monroe, Stan Laurel, Mary Pickford, Cyd Charisse, Walter Matthau, and more.
