As reported by various mainstream media outlets this week (New York Daily News original report, NY Daily News follow-up, Forbes, WREX-13), several memorabilia dealers plead guilty this week to fraud charges related to the sale of “game worn” sports jerseys. Sentencing is scheduled for May 2012, and each maul fraud charge has a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and $250,000 fines. Though a different class of memorabilia from television and film, it is always encouraging to see the FBI direct attention to any sort of memorabilia fraud, as it is very prevalent in all collecting areas. Premiere Props/Hollywood Live Auctions is hosting what has become their annual “Fangoria’s Annual Movie Prop Auction”. This year, it will be at their El Segundo facility on October 22nd and 23rd. As per usual, auction service providers LiveAuctioneers and iCollector have both published the catalog online. The marketing for the event claims over 1,000 items made available for sale, including a mix of original and replica material. Though the sale is Fangoria-branded, it is not limited to the horror genre films/productions; much of the material is from a variety of other types of film, including drama, sci-fi, and action. As reported over recent weeks, Antique Helper offered a collection of mostly Superman-related costumes and memorabilia yesterday, the descriptions of which included caveats and disclaimers as to provenance and authenticity. Generally, the auction results for the costumes highlighted in the prior articles were lackluster, in terms of comparable confirmed authentic examples of the same style and type of wardrobe pieces.
