This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2019. This is the first year that there was not separate exhibit space for both Warner Bros and DC Comics. In 2019, DC Comics has been folded into the Warner Bros exhibit. This now mirrors Marvel, which has one exhibit space as Marvel Entertainment. I would say that this is reflective of the current state of the comic book business, which I suspect is heavily subsidized by films (at least in the case of Marvel) and other programming, as well as licensing and merchandising. Sadly, while comic books used to be the primary business for Marvel and DC when I was growing up, it’s now likely to continue to shrink and may eventually go away altogether. In any event, the Warner Bros booth had some original costumes from Batman films on display (with more on display at the Comic-Con Museum (which is off site, so I did not attend) [Read more…]
San Diego Comic-Con 2019: Batman Film Used Cowls
This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2019. I actually lost track of exactly who the exhibitor was for these Batman cowls, but there was Batman-related merchandise on display. This case included examples of Batman cowls worn in the films from Michael Keaton to Val Kilmer to George Clooney to Christian Bale to Ben Affleck. [Read more…]
San Diego Comic-Con 2018: Costume Designers Guild “Black Panther” and “Justice League” Costume Exhibit
This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2018. The Costume Designers Guild and Art Directors Guild had space within the main exhibit hall this year that featured two original costumes that were incredibly impressive – Okoye from Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War and The Flash from Justice League. [Read more…]
San Diego Comic-Con 2018: DC Comics “The DC Universe Experience” Featuring “Titans” Prop & Costume Exhibit
This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2018. Off site from the convention center, across the street in the Gaslamp District, there was a special event at the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp: The DC Universe Experience. The interactive experience – which included “Doom Patrol Chief’s Lab”, Titans Dick Grayson’s Loft”, “Harley Quinn Chaos Room”, “Swamp Thing Swamp Course”, and “Young Justice Watch Tower” also included a number of original TV and movie props and costumes from past and upcoming DC properties. All was put together to promote the new “DC Universe” “digital experience” membership to watch, shop, read and connect. [Read more…]
San Diego Comic-Con 2018: DC Comics “Shazam” & “Aquaman” Costume Exhibits

Editorial: Profiles in History’s Four Day “Icons & Legends of Hollywood” (Planet Hollywood) Auction Review
The massive Profiles in History “Icons & Legends of Hollywood” four day auction concluded on Friday, and it certainly illustrates some different results when compared to past sales held by the entertainment memorabilia auction house. With over 2,000 lots, it was a tremendous amount of material for the market to absorb all at once, and I suspect that this was reflected in the results. Though the official results have not yet been published on the official Profiles website as of the time of this writing, in going through the results published by internet bidding partner iCollector (and under the assumption that these results also reflect floor and phone bids), it would appear that approximately 45% of the lots were passed over with no bids. I counted approximately 922 unsold lots, and adding up the total it appears that in the final sale that there were 2,050 lots (with 39 lots pulled prior to auction?)… But the other compounding factor is how many lots were sold for far less than one might expect based on past sales. Items that would ordinarily pull in $5,000+ were going for under $2,000 and sometimes even under $1,000. With so much to choose from, it may have become a buyer’s market and it seemed as though some collectors were looking for deals – and finding them. [Read more…]

San Diego Comic-Con 2017: Prop Store TV & Movie Props and Costumes Exhibit Promotes Upcoming Live Auction
This is part of my ongoing coverage of San Diego Comic-Con 2017. As usual, Prop Store had the most impressive exhibit for collectors of original TV and movie props and costumes. They updated the layout and look for their space this year and even though it was the same overall footprint, it felt much bigger. This year, the focus of their presentation was for their upcoming live auction in the Fall, though there was also some space dedicated to their current Spectral auction. [Read more…]
