Premiere Props, known in this art market as a company that holds a lot of low end auctions with great frequency, actually sold a piece this weekend for $344,000 (including fees) to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) in their Hollywood Extravaganza XVII sale. The piece was a model of the Aries 1B Trans-Lunar Space Shuttle from Stanley Kubrick’s science fiction classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey. An interesting development for a number of reasons… 1) Premiere Props usually does not sell high end (six figure) material, 2) AMPAS has already gone public about being the buyer, and 3) who were the underbidders? ‘Star Wars’ Make-Up Artist and Legend Stuart Freeborn Dies at 98
Legendary make-up artist Stuart Freeborn, best known for his work bringing iconic Star Wars characters like Yoda and Chewbacca to life, has passed away at age 98. Having worked in feature films for over 60 years, he also worked with Stanley Kubrick on Dr. Strangelove, as the creator behind the many roles played on screen by Peter Sellers, as well as the ape-like humans in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Cinémathèque Française Hosts Exhibition on Stanley Kubrick Through July 31st, Features Original Movie Props and Costumes
Yesterday the Cinémathèque Française in France began their incredible Stanley Kubrick exhibition, which includes the display of original props, costumes, and production material from his classic films. The attraction will run through the end of July. The traveling exhibition has previously been presented in various cities since 2004, including Berlin, Zurich, Gand, Rome and Melbourn. [Read more…]

Bonhams “Pioneers of Popular Culture” Auction Event Offers Two Important Costumes from ‘Batman’ & ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’
Bonhams will be holding their “Pioneers of Popular Culture” event (Sale 18524) on August 15th at the inaugural Goodwood Vintage Festival in the UK. Though original props and costumes are nearly non-existent among the 273 lots in the auction, the two key pieces present are important and impressive: a three-piece suit worn by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton’s Batman (Lot 192) and an ape costume from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (Lot 193).
