One of my all-time favorite books is The Making of Star Wars: The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film (as reviewed upon release in April 2007) by J.W. Rinzler. Consequently, I’ve been very excited since I heard the news of the follow-up, The Making of the Empire Strikes Back, now slated for an October 12, 2010 release. Star Wars Celebration V, the “official Lucasfilm event celebrating all things Star Wars, produced by fans for fans” has been in full swing this week. While not personally in attendance, I thought I would publish a report on highlights of interest to original prop collectors, notably Lucasfilm announcing the release of the all six Star Wars films on Blu-Ray disc next year (per an interview with the New York Times), which will include never before seen footage, including a scene with Luke finishing the construction of his lightsaber in a cave on Tatooine from Return of the Jedi. The video interview series continues the exploration and discussion about some of the most important pieces on display at their booth, including material from the Alien films, Shawshank Redemption, Gladiator, The Empire Strikes Back, Clash of the Titans, Superman Returns, and more.
The Original Prop Blog interviewed Brandon Alinger of Prop Store at San Diego Comic Con last week. This video feature includes a discussion about some of the most important pieces on display at their booth, including an original bullwhip used by Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the grail diary used in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, and an original Biker Scout Helmet from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Brandon also demonstrates the use of an iPad to make an interactive interface to explore the pages within the grail diary.
Jez Hill, Star Wars Helmets, special guest. This is the fourth ‘Prop Talk’ podcast, a new regular feature for the Original Prop Blog. This is an effort to use old and new technology to bring a richer and more informative and entertaining experience to the site. Jez has really provided a great service to fans with his study of helmets and masks used in the Star Wars films by researching and memorializing information on his “Star Wars Helmets” website for many years.
This is the sixth in a video series highlighting props and costumes in the upcoming Profiles in History “Hollywood Auction 40”. This segment provides Joe Maddalena, CEO of Profiles in History, an opportunity to discuss the provenance of a prop lightsaber attributed to use by the character Darth Vader in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. This is one of many props being sold in the auction event, to be held June 10-12 in Calabasas Hills, CA.
