The Heritage Auction Galleries has published on their latest online catalog and listings for their upcoming event, “Entertainment & Music Memorabilia Signature Auction – Dallas #7089”, to be held on April 26th – 27th at their Dallas, Texas location. Mike Filonczuk today announced the closure of his business, Hollywood Parts, and his new venture with industry heavyweight Profiles History: Hollywood P.R.I.M.E. (Production Resources International Management for Entertainment). While details are sparse and the former company’s website is now gone, based on their own description, it looks like the event auction house is looking to move into territory and business models more akin to competitors like VIP Fan Auctions and Premiere Props (while Premiere Props has become more Profiles in History-like with their off-eBay event auctions with consignor material in recent years). It will be interesting to see how it all plays out over the coming years, assuming Hollywood P.R.I.M.E. has more longevity than other efforts to branch out by both auction houses (such as the Hollywood Treasure cable television series, authentication efforts launched by Profiles years ago with the Dracula poster debacle, and Premiere Props and their own Movie Props DNA quietly launched and quickly abandoned last year). Blacksparrow Auctions will be holding their “Hollywood’s Leading Men & Women Auction” on April 12th at the Hollywood Show at the Westin LAX. Premiere Props have listed their next auction with online bidding partners iCollector, LiveAuctioneers, and Invaluable (formerly ArtFact) as part of their “Hollywood Extravaganza XIII”. The two-day auction is scheduled for this weekend, March 22-23. The sale advertises over 1,000 lots (which includes a lot of autographed, posters, baseballs, and other memorabilia). As with past auctions, the sale includes a mix of original props, costumes, and other film and television artifacts, as well as general Hollywood Memorabilia. There are many vintage off the shelf antiques attributed to film and television productions with no explanation as to how and why such claims are made (like an ice cream scooper attributed to Back to the Future, a starfish from Jaws 2, or a Happy Days wooden box). Proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association (selected by the cable show’s creator and Executive Producer, Steve Franks). Julien’s Auctions has published the online catalog for their upcoming sale – “Hollywood Legends: Featuring Property from the Career of David Hasselhoff” – which will be held at their Beverly Hills gallery on April 11th and 12th. The auction will feature property from the career of David Hasselhoff, the estates of Jonathan Winters and Greta Garbo, and consignments with proceeds marked for a variety of charitable causes as featured in the new unscripted Lifetime series, Celebrity Home Raiders. On the heels of their “Trilogy Collection” auction of Lord of the Rings material late last year, next month Julien’s Auctions will feature the best piece from Peter Jackson’s Academy Award-winning franchise yet: a screen-used hero Gimli double-headed axe, from the personal collection of John Rhys-Davies. This piece was given to Rhys-Davies on the last day of filming by Peter Jackson himself. The hero axe was used in The Two Towers. Sometimes I get busy and simply don’t have the time to publish a preview of each and every auction, particularly ongoing, monthly, online-only auctions (though I list everything of relevance that I am aware of in my monthly auction calendar feature). This site and my efforts here are all done essentially pro bono (any advertising revenue collected does not come close to offsetting my costs accrued over the years), so I’m always a bit surprised when dealers get demanding with me for overlooking whatever for profit endeavor that they expect me to promote for them (gratis), especially when they’ve never made any contribution to the resource that is this website…. In any event, I was on the receiving end of e-mails and a phone call from the people at Nate D. Sanders in the past few weeks for not previewing their February auction (which is listed in my February calendar); said auction ended yesterday. One of the notable sales was a collection of Jaws memorabilia, but more interesting to me was that the lot that realized $50,000 with Nate D. Sanders could have been had for around $7,000 at public auction on eBay two months ago. [Read more…]
