Jim Bowers of CapedWonder.com informed me of a new article by Martin Lakin (with Chris King) published on his site today – IS IT SILK? IS IT PLASTIC?: A Study of the ‘Superman’ Movie Costumes 1978-1987. This study is, in my opinion, the definitive primer on original Superman costumes from the Christopher Reeve films of the 70s and 80s. It is well-written, remarkably well-researched, rich with information and details, and presented as an excellent all-in-one overview resource.

This article includes great history about the development of the costumes and includes a wealth of information that has not been covered in any of the OPB articles on this subject, so I can’t recommend enough that readers check it out. Martin and Chris also took fantastic photos of the Superman costume on display at the Movieum (some of which were kindly shared with the OPB for past articles) which are now available at CapedWonder.com.
My opinion of the “state of the marketplace” for Superman costumes is that it is important that everyone be armed with information, and this article is a superb accomplishment to that end.
Special gratitude to Martin Lakin, Chris King, and Jim Bowers for all of the work in putting this fantastic resource together for fans of the films and original prop collectors alike.
