The annual International Make-Up Artist Trade Show (IMATS) is being held this weekend at the Pasadena Convention Center in Los Angeles – June 20-21, 2009.
Per the MakeUpArtistShow.com website:
About the Show
Known simply as “The Show” to the make-up world, the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show (IMATS) is the only show of its kind in the world. Thousands of make-up artists, vendors, manufacturers and enthusiasts convene for the make-up world’s biggest gathering to discuss, display, discover and collect the best the industry has to offer. If you’ve ever wanted to learn the techniques or experiment with the products, or if you just have an interest in the art of make-up, then L.A. is where you need to be. The show is open to the public. No make-up artist credentials are required to get you in the door.
The Pasadena Convention Center (located at 300 East Green Street, Pasadena, Calif. 91101) will host IMATS, presented by Make-Up Artist magazine. On June 20 and 21, 2009, make-up pros will come together to provide the finest education and demonstrations in the world- ideas will be exchanged, products tried, and make-up secrets revealed.
History
During the mid-’90s, there were no trade shows specifically for make-up artists, and cosmetic companies expressed a desire for such an event. Knowing just how much education could be provided, Make-Up Artist publisher Michael Key held the first International Make-Up Artist Trade Show in August 1997. The Show allowed artists to custom-tailor what they wanted to see. It offered a diverse mix of presentations, products, demonstrations, and education by some of the biggest names in the business. Like Make-Up Artist magazine, the trade show continues to further Key’s vision to educate and reach make-up artists around the world.
I also received some information from the museum exhibit curator, Ron Magid:
This year, IMATS is pleased to showcase the work of one of the greatest families in the field of makeup: the Burmans. This is the most comprehensive exhibit of the family’s work ever to be publicly displayed.
- The Burman Studio – overview of the careers of husband and wife makeup team Tom Burman and Bari Dreiband-Burman, including screen used displays from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Cat People, The Beast Within, Teen Wolf, The Manitou and many others, as well as their Emmy winning work from Nip/Tuck and Grey’s Anatomy.
- Barney Burman/Proteus FX: screen used makeups from Star Trek (2009), Mission Impossible 3, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny and others.
- Rob Burman/Sticks and Stones FX – full body victim from Mr. Brooks and others.
We will also be displaying original makeups from the following artists and films:
- Legacy FX – screen used Terminator Salvation T-600 endoskeleton figure
- Greg Cannom – Oscar winning Benjamin Button makeups for Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett
- John Chambers – 1968 Planet of the Apes full figure displays plus FX bodies from others
