Movie heroes’ vehicles displayed at Island museum
By Bob Doda
August 22, 2008 | 12:26 PMCommack Fire Chief Sal Formica, who has made headlines repeatedly for his life-saving efforts, can rush to the rescue in the vehicle of real-life heroes: a fire truck. Meanwhile, his father-in-law builds the cars of superheroes of the silver screen, and his firm is bringing them to Long Island for a visit.
While “The Dark Knight” is still bringing in record numbers at the box office, George Barris, creator of the original Batmobile, and Andy Perillo, Formica’s father-in-law, have put in motion the largest movie and television car show the East Coast has ever hosted.
The event, set for this weekend at Long Island’s Cradle of Aviation Museum, will showcase 10 of the most famous cars ever to hit the airwaves. They include, in addition to the original Batmobile, General Lee from “The Dukes of Hazzard,” the James Bond Aston-Martin, and vehicles from “Knight Rider” and “Ghostbusters.”
The fundraising event is sponsored by The Committee for the Autoseum, a group that believes in the preservation of famous cars and automotive education of future generations. They are raising money to build the Autoseum, a Long Island museum that would accomplish those goals. Perillo, a committee member, said that nothing is more important than fostering children’s learning. “We have to make sure they are not getting their education in the streets,” he said. “That’s exactly what I’m interested in.”
Perillo, who has been working on cars since he was nine years old, is not only a movie and television prop and automotive expert – he is also an electrical and structural engineer. Perillo has built cars for the likes of George Steinbrenner, Elvis Presley and Hulk Hogan. Perillo takes pride in the fact that despite the company’s small size, The Barris Group can produce many of the cars that larger manufacturers would never think of tackling. Their motto is, “If it can be done, we’ll do it,” he said.
This movie-car show, located at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City Aug. 23 and 24, features other attractions, including rides, vendors, prizes, a psychic demonstration and live entertainment. The Autoseum has high hopes of incorporating restaurants, retail shops, catering, weddings, the arts and entertainment, all while preserving the history of the world’s most famous cars.
The Autoseum “will open up doors for future generations to change the way we think about cars,” Perillo said – and that includes what they run on. “The public should get what they deserve – better and cheaper sources of fuel,” he added.
