The L.A. Times reports that Stan Winston, Academy Award-winning visual effects and make-up artist died last night surrounded by family, following a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma.
Mr. Winston was a pioneering force in visual effects in film, with a remarkable number of professional achievements, including 4 Oscars and many more nominations. He has worked on classic and beloved science fiction and action films such as The Thing, Aliens, Predator, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, all three Jurassic Park films, all three Terminator films, and many more.
He truly made a huge contribution to the sci fi and horror genres in particular, in that his work made characters and creatures in these films much more realistic and believable, and made these films much more successful than they might have been with his brand of “movie magic”.
