Marshall University to auction off film props

The Herald-DispatchHUNTINGTON — To coincide with the release of the “We Are Marshall” DVD, the university is hosting an online auction of movie props to raise money for scholarships.
Warner Bros. donated about 40 items, the majority of which are memorabilia from the movie.
“We have jerseys that were used in filming that are actually dirty,” said Rebecca Samples, director of annual giving for Marshall University. “We have one of the hats that the coaches wore that is tagged ‘Red’ inside — one could assume that was worn by Matthew Fox. We have varsity jackets and cheerleader uniforms that were worn, coaches’ attire, ball caps and windbreakers.”
Prop newspapers with memorable headlines from that time will be auctioned, as well as prop NCAA letters to former Marshall President Dr. Donald Dedmon (played by David Strathairn) and menus from Boone’s diner, which actually have the menu of Jim’s Steak and Spaghetti House on the inside.
“We’ve been amazed at what Warner Bros. was able to send us, and they did that to help us raise money for scholarships,” Samples said. Items that were not donated are those that could be used in future films or were snagged by the cast and crew, she said.
“We did not get access to football helmets because they will be used in another film,” she said.
The auction goes live at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, the same day that the DVD is released. The Web site is not yet determined, but there will be links to it from Marshall’s home page and from HerdZone.com.
Monday, Sept. 17, will be a preview day when potential shoppers can go online and see what’s available, Samples said. It will be along the lines of an eBay type of auction, where items will be available for a week or more.
