Per ContactMusic.com, it looks like all four of the cars put up for auction in the Profiles in History event last week failed to sell. Going by eBay results, it appeared that the Days of Thunder car had sold, but perhaps not:
SOPRANOS SUV + CRUISE CAR FAIL TO SELL AT AUCTION
LATEST: TONY SOPRANO’s Chevrolet Suburban SUV and TOM CRUISE’s DAYS OF THUNDER stock car are among the movie memorabilia items that failed to sell at a two-day auction last week (02-03Aug07). Both vehicles were removed from the Profiles In History sale when bidding failed to reach their reserve prices. The Sopranos vehicle was expected to fetch between $30,000 (GBP15,000) and $50,000 (GBP25,000), while bidding on the Cruise car failed to hit $40,000 (GBP20,000). And they weren’t the only motors which stalled at the auction – an original screen-used General Lee car from The Dukes Of Hazzard TV show also failed to sell. Profiles In History spokesman Brian Chanes says, “We have no explanation. We’ve sold the Knight Rider car here and (TV detective) Magnum’s Ferrari but these vehicles didn’t sell. At present there’s no word as to whether we’ll attempt to sell them at a later auction.”

I’ve always been interested in the viability of original prop car collecting, in that the hobby is currently fairly small, so the prospect of collecting an original car is an order of magnitude above and beyond, given not only cost but storage and care requirements. It will be interesting to see if any more cars turn up in future Profiles auction events. I am sure the consignments were useful in promotion and marketing, at the very least, as some of these pieces were the lead topics in news stories covering the event.
