About OPB Book Reviews
A new feature to the OPB is an ongoing series of non fiction, hobby-related book reviews that might be of interest to original prop collectors, or, at the very least, fans of film and television.I had been waiting for one particular book to arrive (The Making of Star Wars) before launching into these reviews, in that, in rating these books, it’s nice to have a benchmark for quality. I suspected this book might set that mark, and I am not disappointed. Many of the reviews will be retroactive (reviews of books which have been in release for some time or even out of print).
Every book review will rate the work in the following areas: Written Content, Visual Collateral, Presentation/Quality, and Value.
The overall score will be a subjective (i.e. non mathematical) score, ranging from 0-10 (10 being best), as a nod to the scoring system used by greatest magazine in publication today, Edge Magazine (nothing at all to do with props!).
The purpose of providing a review with an overall score as well as evaluation of those particular areas is taking the perspective of the original prop hobbyist in mind, in that sometimes we are looking for photos pertaining to props and editorial content is of less interest; other times, in performing research, we may be seeking information moreso than photos, etc. So it will give the reader an idea of the content in the event he or she cannot review the book prior to purchase.
If any reader has additional input or insights regarding any of the works reviewed, please feel free to comment in response to the topic with your own opinions.
Also, the works reviewed will obviously be a reflection of my own interests, so if something significant is passed over completely, well, I can’t review everything.
Lastly, I tend to do all of my book shopping through Amazon.com, in that it is convenient, their prices are good, and as an Amazon Prime member (highly recommended), I pay just $80 a year for unlimited “free” 2-day shipping on everything I buy, so I will link back to them for more info on the works and to for the sake of consistency of information (basic book stats, pricing, publish date, print status, etc.).
Thanks,
